The Rolex Submariner was unveiled in 1953 as one of the first dive watches genuinely built to withstand the depths, and grew into the archetype of the genre. It built on the waterproof Oyster case Rolex had introduced back in 1926, adding a unidirectional rotating bezel that lets a diver safely read off elapsed dive time. The combination of a rugged case, strongly luminous Mercedes hands and flawless legibility made it a favourite among professionals and adventurers alike. In the decades since, the Submariner has become a cultural icon equally at home under a wetsuit or a tailored suit. This steel version with a black dial and ceramic bezel is the purest, most classic form of the Submariner.
